Sunday Swing at Stumptown Dance

Posted on Updated on

I went to the Portland Lindy Society’s Sunday Swing event and it was not what I was expecting. It was a blast! But there are a few things you should know: first, dress up! It is either hosted at the Norse Hall or in the basement of the Melody Ballroom I know the picture on their website shows people in tights and stuff, definitely go on more of the dressier side of casual. Ladies think 40’s and 50’s dresses and skirts and only wear heels if you can dance in them. Vans or converse are great options but if you have oxfords, definitely wear them! Gents: wear anything from jeans and a v-neck or plaid shirt to slacks, a vest, and a dress shirt. Don’t be afraid to overdress because you will be happy that you did when you get there! It is $8.00 to get in or $6.00 with a valid student id. Don’t always depend on there being a water fountain so bring water- you’ll need it! They do sell water there for $1.00, but just bring your own, save a buck! Also, be prepared to dance with a bunch of people- they encourage you do to get better and you are going to switch about 10 times during the class portion. 7:00-7:30pm is the intermediate session which goes through a 5 week rotation of skills, 7:30-8:00pm is the beginner session, that I attended, and then 8:00-11:00pm is the free dance. It is a ton of fun and a good night out that is different from your run of the mill night out dinner and a movie. Here’s a link to their website in case you want more information! Hope you go, it’s a blast!
